Japanese Couldn't Believe One P-61 Was Hunting Them — Until 4 Bombers Disappeared in 80 Minutes.
On the night of December 29-30, 1944, Major Carroll C. Smith and his radar operator Lt. Philip Porter climbed into their P-61 Black Widow knowing 12 Japanese bombers were inbound to destroy the vital Mindoro airfields. What followed was the single greatest night-fighter patrol of World War II: five confirmed kills (four bombers and one fighter) in pitch-black skies, a blind landing on a pitch-dark coral strip with almost no fuel left, and two more kills the next day — making Smith the highest-scoring American night-fighter ace of the war would ever see.
This is the forgotten story of the night the P-61 proved radar could own the darkness.
