Story:
This is the story of the Edo period.
Hatamoto, who had protected Tokugawa's close associates with their valor, were treated coldly after the Oki era began, and their resentment manifested itself in various ways, including the tyranny of the Shiragara-gumi, headed by Mizuno Jurozaemon. When the Nakamura Ayame troupe interfered with a play at the Yamamura-za theater, the town serf Hatazuin Chobei managed to save the day, but since then, the Shiragara-gumi has been an enemy of the Hatazuin family. Furthermore, Mizuno's resentment toward Chobei was further fueled by the fact that Konpachi Shirai, who had saved Mizuno's life on his way home from a pilgrimage to Kawasaki and taken him for a meal, had defeated the Shirakara clan in a fight with the Komurasaki Hanakai, who were at the height of their popularity in Yoshiwara. Mizuno was in love with Koshimoto Okinu, but he was in agony because he had another marriage proposal, and when Okinu broke the Nanban-e plate, a family heirloom, Mizuno lost his temper and discarded it. Okinu's elder brother, Sogoro Uoya, stormed into Mizuno's mansion, but was thrown out and complained to Chobei about the situation. Chobei, not wanting to be involved in any trouble, quietly dismissed him. Gonpachi was not satisfied with Chobei's attitude and had Ayame Nakamura put on a play about Okinu, pretending that Chobei was pushing her to do so, in order to arouse public opinion against Hatamoto's tyranny. Mizuno offered to hand Ayame over to Chobei, and Chobei went to Jurozaemon's mansion by himself without regard to his henchmen's attempts to stop him, and the two men came to a mutual understanding over a heart-to-heart match. However, while Chobei was taking a bath at the suggestion of Jurozaemon, he was attacked by the bloodthirsty Shirakara clan, and Jurozaemon, realizing that there was no way to stop them, stabbed Chobei in the bath.
