Here's a great exercise I incorporate into my warm up, when I'm out on tour before going onstage.
I call it: ONE, TWO, THREE, FOURS
One = single stroke roll
Two = double stroke roll
Three = triplets
Four = quads
I'll generally play around 4 - 6 bars of each rudiment. This is not a set measure or time. I don't even count the bars. I simply go from Ones to Twos to Threes to Fours when I feel like it.
I also will switch up the pattern with no structure. No structure meaning I'm not overthinking it. If I feel like hitting triplets after singles, I'll do it.
Remember, the focus is to warm up, not get stuck in the weeds on any set pattern.
While I'm doing this hand exercise, I will play single stroke double bass at the same time. The double bass always stays at single strokes throughout the exercise, regardless of what the hands are doing.
Think of the single stroke double bass like a light switch. Just turn it on, and forget about it. Focus on the hands.
The helps develop a little bit of independence as well as hand/foot coordination.
Hope this helps. Give it a try and as always,
KEEP IT HEAVY!
