El Ateneo Grand Splendid encabeza varios récords: es la librería más grande de Sudamérica, fue elegida por el diario británico The Guardian como la segunda mejor librería del mundo y la revista estadounidense National Geographic la destacó como la más linda. Por acá pasan por día cientos de personas que no dejan de maravillarse con el espectáculo que los rodea. Porque si bien se puede comprar música, películas y libros, entrar a este lugar es una experiencia por sí misma.
La librería fue inaugurada el 4 de diciembre de 2000 pero el edificio conserva el antiguo esplendor y elegancia del teatro Grand Splendid de principios de siglo XX: con sus barandas originales, la decoración intacta y una imponente cúpula con frescos, de 20 metros de diámetro. El motivo elegido para decorar el “cielo” del lugar es una representación de la paz, algo muy significativo ya que fue realizada por Nazareno Orlandi en 1919, justo el mismo año en el que había terminado la Primera Guerra Mundial.
En el antiguo escenario –con el telón de terciopelo entreabierto– funciona un bar que invita a sentarse libro en mano. También se pueden aprovechar los sillones que están a ambos lados de la sala principal o bien ubicarse en los exclusivos palcos que funcionan como pequeñas salas de lectura. En el subsuelo se despliega un sector dedicado a los libros infantiles, y el piso superior suele ser el elegido para muestras y exposiciones.

The Ateneo Grand Splendid tops several records: it is the largest bookstore in South America, it was chosen by the British newspaper The Guardian as the second best bookstore in the world and the American magazine National Geographic highlighted it as the most beautiful. Hundreds of people pass through here every day who never cease to marvel at the spectacle that surrounds them. Because while you can buy music, movies, and books, walking into this place is an experience in itself.
The bookstore was inaugurated on December 4, 2000 but the building retains the former splendor and elegance of the Grand Splendid theater of the early twentieth century: with its original railings, intact decoration and an imposing dome with frescoes, 20 meters in diameter. The motif chosen to decorate the "sky" of the place is a representation of peace, something very significant since it was made by Nazareno Orlandi in 1919, just the same year in which the First World War had ended.
On the old stage – with the velvet curtain slightly open – there is a bar that invites you to sit down with a book in hand. You can also take advantage of the armchairs that are on both sides of the main room or sit in the exclusive boxes that function as small reading rooms. In the basement there is a sector dedicated to children's books, and the upper floor is usually chosen for samples and exhibitions.
