Torn down at the height of his career, Oscar Wilde suffered the fate of a tortured artist due to his love for poet and aristocrat Lord Alfred Douglas. Douglas’ father, John Sholto Douglas, the 9th Marquess of Queensberry, swore revenge against Wilde for “corrupting” his son. Wilde and Douglas were unapologetic about their love in a time and place where homosexuality was illegal. Unfortunately, they did not defeat the odds together, but instead became victims of an intense father/son rivalry, and the prejudiced times they lived in.
