Gamefishingireland ties a Loco Sand Hopper fly. Sand hoppers (talitrus saltator) form an important part of the diet of many inshore marine fish. Most fish are opportunists and bass and mullet are no exception. Where sand hoppers are abundant fish will take advantage of a readily available food source. The loco sand hopper is similar enough to a shrimp that the pattern can also work for shrimp. The fly makes use of a foam back to sit on or hover just beneath the surface, which is useful where fish are feeding close to the surface or when fishing in very shallow water. The gurgler style foam over the eye of the hook allows for surface disturbance if stripping the fly which can attract fish such as bass. Mullet are known to take foam backed flies with Colin McLeod's dambuster fly being an obvious example.
