August 1944. Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, Granville, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower sat at his desk reading a field report that made his jaw tighten. The paper came from Lieutenant General George S. Patton Junior, dated August 20, 1944. Patton's words jumped off the page with confidence and pride. His Third Army had sealed the Falaise Pocket, he wrote. His forces had destroyed the German Seventh Army. Victory belonged to American troops under his command.
