The Parting Glass is a song of Scottish origin and its earliest printed version appears in the 1700s, although phrases of the lyrics date to 1605. The song also became known in Ireland, first appearing in Irish print in the early 1800s. It has maintained a singular beloved status in Ireland. Many iconic versions, including recordings and performances by Liam Clancy and The Clancy Brothers, have continued to sustain the song's treasured place in the collective heart of Ireland, and the world.

I believe the magic of The Parting Glass lies in its emotional yet restrained contemplation of loss. The speaker's goodbye is inevitable and the lyrics evoke the parting of friends, of lovers, and perhaps, even of life. In the gentle rise and soft call of the speaker, beautiful words of reflection, regret, and recognition reverberate in our minds, triggering our own introspections of loss. The song is a loving surrender, an acceptance of circumstances, and a wish for joy for the friends and listeners who will be left behind.

The ring in the video is a Claddagh ring, a traditional Irish jewellery piece that originates in the Claddagh, Co. Galway, where my grandmother and her family were from. The ring can be worn on different fingers and hands to represent marital and relationship statuses. The heart represents love, the hands represent friendship, and the crown represents loyalty. These are precious gifts that we should give freely and fiercely to the special people in our lives. If we are fortunate, we will be blessed to receive them ourselves.
