On April 15, 2025, a fire broke out inside an engineering classroom at Portland State University after several lithium-ion batteries went into thermal runaway during class. The fourth floor of the building filled with smoke, forcing an evacuation while fire crews responded. Thankfully, no one was hurt—but this incident highlights a growing concern on college campuses nationwide.
Students are building high-powered projects using lithium-ion batteries—often with little oversight or understanding of the risks. In this video, I break down what happened at PSU, why these fires are becoming more common, and what schools need to do to prevent the next one.
