It was 150 years ago that the IXL Lime Company made its first batch of lime in its kilns on Fall Creek near Felton, California. In honor of this anniversary, historian Frank Perry presents a lecture on the history of the company and the importance of lime production in early Santa Cruz County history. Lime was an essential ingredient in making mortar and plaster.
Around 1900, the operation was taken over by Henry Cowell, and today Fall Creek is a unit of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park.
In 2007, Frank Perry co-authored the book Lime Kiln Legacies: The History of the Lime Industry in Santa Cruz County. Since 2008 he has served on the board of the Friends of the Cowell Lime Works Historic District at UCSC. In 2024, he authored the book, Geology of the Northern Monterey Bay Region. He has done several displays on Sant Cruz County's historic lime industry, including outdoor interpretive signs at Fall Creek.
