Experience a cinematic retelling of Geoffrey Chaucer's provocative "The Wife of Bath's Tale," a story exploring power, punishment, and the true meaning of redemption. This full animated story from The Canterbury Tales follows a disgraced knight on a desperate quest to discover what all women truly desire, leading him to a surprising fate he never could have imagined.
-- The Story --
The tale begins with Sir Kellik, King Sev's proudest champion, whose unforgivable act of arrogance earns him a death sentence from the cruel Queen Lyra. For her own amusement, she offers him a single, impossible chance: he has one year and a day to discover the one thing all women desire most, or face his execution.
Kellik's quest becomes a journey into despair as his year runs out. He seeks answers from every walk of life, but finds only contradiction. A woman of the street tells him women desire pleasure without consequence. A wealthy noblewoman demands he win a tournament for her honor before declaring that women want riches and luxury. A beautiful, vain maiden makes him act as her escort at a festival, only to mock him and claim that women desire flattery and the freedom to be admired. Finally, a pragmatic farmer's wife forces him to till her fields before telling him that women want security and a stable home.
Lost, broken, and with no single answer, Kellik stumbles into the domain of Va, a mysterious Dryad. After putting his character to the test by having him defend her forest from woodcutters, she takes pity on his genuine despair. She directs him toward his last hope: a reclusive old crone living deep in the woods, said to hold the true answer.
The crone agrees to save his life, but only after Kellik swears a binding magical oath to grant her first request, whatever it may be. With the secret of "sovereignty" finally in his possession, he returns to court and saves his life... only to be horrified when the crone invokes the oath and demands her terrible price: marriage. He is forced to wed the hideous old woman, to the delight of the humiliated Queen. But on their wedding night, a final choice and a shocking transformation reveal the true nature of the crone's identity and the profound consequences of his quest.
-- About This Adaptation --
This is a modern retelling that re-frames the famous tale into a story of personal transformation and consequence. While Chaucer's original is a lesson on sovereignty, this version asks a deeper question: What does true redemption look like for a man whose pride has led to ruin? By casting the tale's magical figure as a non-human Dryad with her own agenda, the story explores themes of cultural collision and justice. The ending challenges the traditional "happily ever after," suggesting that true atonement isn't found by returning to one's old life, but by having the humility to embrace a new one entirely.
