LIVE: Waqf Law Faces Supreme Test As SC Hears Petitions Challenging Amendment Act | News9

A constitutional showdown began in the Supreme Court today as over 70 petitions challenge the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. A three-judge bench led by CJI Sanjiv Khanna is hearing arguments from heavyweight lawyers including Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who are calling the law unconstitutional. Key issues include the controversial 5-year Islamic practice clause to create a waqf, the scrapping of ‘waqf by user’, and the appointment of non-Muslims to Waqf Boards. The Centre, represented by SG Tushar Mehta, defends the law amid heated debate and interim reliefs. Even the Delhi High Court land was cited as a possible waqf — raising eyebrows. Next hearing is scheduled for Thursday at 2 PM.
