First published in 1933 in the Journal of the English Folk Dance & Song Society in the key of A, this is an old traditional tune that was collected from fiddler Malon Hamilton in East Orange, VT, USA when he was 85 years old. He called it "The Twin Sisters". In that same EFDSS Journal Maud Karpeles suggested it as "a suitable accompaniment for those who wish to perform the (Upton-On-Severn) Stick dance", and it has been known more by that association ever since.
I learned it from the playing of John Watcham on the "Rattlebone & Ploughjack" album and it is played here on a 30-button Herrington C/G Anglo Concertina with Wheatstone/Lachenal layout.
Some of you might even recognize this as being used as the opening tune for the "Shepherd's Hey" radio program of traditional British folk music that aired in Houston back in the 80's and 90's.
Want to learn how to play tunes like this? Then you need to get the tutor "Anglo Concertina in the Harmonic Style".
