India’s Aero-Engine Challenge & Path to Self-Reliance
India has made significant technological strides post-independence, from developing HAL HF-24 Marut to launching SLV-3 and conducting nuclear tests. However, aero-engine development remains a challenge. Despite Kaveri Engine Programme efforts, lack of expertise, reliance on Russian testing, and inadequate infrastructure have hindered progress.
Globally, only a few nations master aero-engines, with GE, Rolls-Royce, Safran, and Pratt & Whitney leading the industry. India’s HAL, GTRE, ADE, and private firms are working on indigenous solutions, including UAV and helicopter engines.
To achieve self-reliance, India must:
• Shift oversight to the PMO and adopt a mission-mode approach
• Transform GTRE into a collaborative hub
• Strengthen private-sector participation
• Invest in critical testing infrastructure
A robust R&D ecosystem and institutional reforms will reduce dependency, enhance strategic autonomy, and position India as a key aerospace power.
