URB 605: Great Urban Thinkers is a graduate course offered by Simon Fraser University's Urban Studies Program in the spring 2026 semester. It is taught by Sarah Robertshaw on Tuesdays (5:30-9:20 PM) at the SFU Vancouver campus (Harbour Centre). The course runs from January 5th-April 10th, 2026.
COURSE DETAILS:
Who are the foundational thinkers and what are movements that have built the way we currently consider and create cities and the urban form? We will be examining the debates, the events, and the writings that have defined the large and interdisciplinary field of urban studies, building a throughline across history to see our current urban condition.
This course will mainly focus on a selection of western urban scholarship, but we will have opportunities to discuss critiques, challenge, and incorporate alternative historic or contemporary thinkers from the outside of this canon. While we will be using supplementary materials like films, art, and music, this course is primarily focused on engaging with original texts, resulting in a critical book review based on the students’ choice of an urban thinker’s work.
