This climb was part of my ten day hike 👉    • A fine weather window - Wild camping   video but it also deserves a video of its own as it provides such spectacular views of many of Mt Aspiring National Park's peaks.

Aspiring Flat is located 12km up the East Matukituki valley of Mt Aspiring National Park from the Wanaka Mt Aspiring road. Ideally give yourself 2-3 days to walk in, camp and climb Sisyphus on day two then either walk out or stay a second night. This valley is a breath-taking place to camp and is much less visited than the much more popular West Matukituki.
The climb in "good weather" is simple enough with just a few place where a bit of scrambling maybe necessary. There was a rough ground trail thru the vegetation as we climbed up the scree banks of the upper reaches of Rainbow stream. From there the terrain is very dynamic and there was no discernable trail. We stayed high and took the easiest route thru the boulder fields and the old glacier face under Fastness Peak to the saddle. From there an intermittent trail leads up the the summit of Sisyphus.
