In this week’s episode of the Indie’N Folk Project, we are thrilled to host the renowned rapper and MTV Hustle Season 1 finalist, Arpan Kumar Chandel aka King. Known for his hit tracks such as ‘Maan Meri Jaan,’ ‘Tu Aake Dekhle,’ ‘G.O.A.T Shit,’ ‘Oops,’ and ‘Tum Saath Rehna,’ as well as his blockbuster albums ‘Champagne Talk,’ ‘NEW LIFE,’ and ‘The Carnival,’ King has consistently enchanted audiences with his musical prowess. Recently, he also represented India at Cannes. He returns triumphantly with his latest hip-hop album, ‘Monopoly Moves,’ featuring tracks like ‘GOAT SHIT,’ ‘STILL THE SAME,’ ‘WAY BIGGER,’ ‘BAWE MEIN CHECK,’ ‘MISFIT,’ ‘KODAK,’ ‘SAZA,’ and ‘PYAAR HUMARA.’ Mark your calendars for August 2, 2024, when six new tracks will drop on all streaming platforms.
The interview begins with Peeyush welcoming King to the set, reminiscing about their previous shoots and sharing laughs about their new office setup. The interview kicks off with Peeyush asking King (also recognized by the alias King Rocco) to show his IDs to illustrate how much a person can change through different life stages.
Peeyush then delves into whether King feels the pressure to remain humble and philosophical despite his rise as a major hip-hop star in India. Peeyush revisits King’s manifestation of a collaboration with Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan, as discussed in a previous interview. Despite Badshah already having collaborated with the actor, King remains hopeful and continues to manifest this dream, especially in light of Suhana Khan’s upcoming movie titled ‘King.’
The conversation shifts to the hip-hop scenes in Delhi and Mumbai, with Peeyush asking if sharing real stories of artists' struggles remains relevant over time. King responds thoughtfully, emphasizing the importance of authenticity in music. Peeyush then asks King about his equivalent to the iconic duo B. Praak and Jaani. King humbly admits that there is no ‘secret sauce’ to his writing and asserts his commitment to creating his own songs rather than claiming others' work.
King's management members, Shweta and Bhavya, are mentioned next. Peeyush inquires if they watch King’s growth from his MTV Hustle days, to which King fondly recalls revisiting his ‘Badnaam Raja’ performance a year after it aired. When asked about his earlier remark regarding ‘badla’ (revenge), King expresses contentment with his achievements and reveals that his passion fueled the creation of his monumental new album ‘Monopoly Moves’ and the story behind the creation of the album.
The topic of marriage arises, with King expressing his preference for a love marriage. He then defines success as being in a position where he can achieve his desires and hints at writing a book about his dual identity, Arpan and King, when he turns 50, sharing tales of survival in the industry.
Peeyush asks about the last time King cried, to which he reveals it was while writing lyrics for his new song (king ka new song) ‘WAR CRY’ with rapper Raftaar. In a lighter segment on the interview, King recounts his experience at the Ambani wedding, describing the opulent setting and encounters with Anant Ambani, Jackie Shroff, and Ranveer Singh, contrasting it with performing for his fans.
King highlights his favorite collaboration from his new album, the track ‘FUCK WHAT THEY SAY’ with MC Stan. Addressing the ‘Kendrick vs. Drake’ debate, King chooses Drake, praising his significant discography and contributions to the music industry. King expresses pride in himself before going on stage and names ‘Ajooba’ and ‘Lala’ as underrated artists in the Indian hip-hop scene.
