In this video we discuss how we can use the equipartition theorem of solids and the harmonic approxilator (yup I said it) in order to determine the heat capacity of a 3D insulator.
Classically it was thought that for an ideal solid, the heat capacity would be independent of temperature, and related to the number of degrees of freedom of the particles comprising the solid (Dulong-Petit law). However experimentally it was found that the heat capacity is not constant for low temperatures, but does saturate to the same constant for high temperatures. This video uses the Einstein approximation of N independent harmonic oscillators in 3 dimensions to see if it can accurately describe how the heat capacity behaves at low temperatures.
