In Vorupør, a small fishing village on the west coast of Jutland, a special method is used to pull fishing boats up onto the beach and out into the sea, because the town lacks a traditional harbor. Instead, all launching and landing take place directly from and to the beach – a technique that has been used for centuries and is still practiced today.

How it works:
In the middle of the beach stands a powerful, electrically or diesel-powered winch (also called a capstan), mounted in a solid housing or foundation. The winch is connected to a long steel wire or a strong cable, which is used to pull the boats up and down.

When a fishing boat comes in from the sea, the cable is pulled out and attached to the bow of the boat. The winch starts and slowly pulls the boat up over the sloping beach. The boats are typically flat-bottomed or have a shallow draft, which makes it easier for them to slide over the sand. Wooden or plastic skids are often used under the keel to reduce friction.

When the boats need to head back out to sea, the process is reversed: The cable is tightened and then carefully released, so the boat slides down the beach and into the surf. The crew carefully times the launch according to the waves and current, to give the boat the best possible push off from the shore.

In the old days, boats were pulled using hand winches or horsepower, but today electric or hydraulic winches are used. In some cases, tractors also assist, especially for large boats or heavy loads.

This method is completely unique to places like Vorupør, Thorup Strand, and Lild Strand – and today it is an attraction in itself. It is also one of the last places in Europe where fishing is still carried out directly from an open beach.

I Vorupør, en lille fiskerby på den jyske vestkyst, bruges en særlig metode til at trække fiskerbåde op på stranden og ud i havet, fordi byen ikke har en traditionel havn. I stedet foregår al søsætning og landgang direkte fra og til stranden – en teknik, der har været brugt i århundreder og stadig praktiseres.

Sådan fungerer det:
Midt på stranden står et kraftigt, elektrisk eller dieseldrevet trækspil (også kaldet et spil), der er monteret i et solidt hus eller fundament. Spillet er forbundet til en lang stålwire eller et kraftigt kabel, som bruges til at trække bådene op og ned.

Når en fiskerbåd kommer ind fra havet, bliver kablet trukket ud og fastgjort i bådens stævn. Trækspillet starter og haler stille og roligt båden op over den skrånende strand. Bådene er typisk fladbundede eller med lavt dybgang, hvilket gør det lettere at glide hen over sandet. Ofte bruges træskinner eller plastikskinner under kølen for at mindske friktionen.

Når bådene skal på havet igen, sker det i omvendt rækkefølge: Kablet spændes op og kontrolleret slækkes, så båden glider ned ad stranden og ud i brændingen. Besætningen timingen nøje i forhold til bølger og strøm, så båden får bedst muligt afsæt til at komme fri af kysten.

I gamle dage blev både trukket med håndspil eller hestekræfter, men i dag bruges elektriske eller hydrauliske spil. I nogle tilfælde hjælpes der også til med traktorer, især ved store både eller tung last.

Denne metode er helt unik for steder som Vorupør, Thorup Strand og Lild Strand – og er i dag en attraktion i sig selv. Det er også en af de sidste steder i Europa, hvor fiskeri stadig drives direkte fra åben strand.
