He Wasn't Supposed To Be World Champion...

In April 2023, Grandmaster Ding Liren was crowned the 17th undisputed World Chess Champion, after Magnus Carlsen abdicated the title and Ding defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi.
Ding has had an incredible story starting from not qualifying for the Candidates tournament at all, to losing in the first round of the Candidates and needing to beat Hikaru Nakamura on demand in the last round to place 2nd, needing Magnus to abdicate his title for him to qualify for the World Championship match.
He then went behind in the match 3 times, had to battle depression, and had his opening preparation leaked in the middle of the match. And yet, he overcame all this to win the coveted title of World Chess Champion in the last game of the rapid tiebreaks. A truly incredible story indeed.
