The Balikligöl Statue
The oldest statue of a life size human figure yet discovered in the world (dated at 10,000 BC). Officially named the 'Balikligöl Statue'it was discovered in 1993 in the ancient Kurdish city of Sanliurfa in central southern Turkey.
The two-meter high limestone statue depicts a man with hands poised over his genitals. The eyes are carved out of obsidian ( a dark volcanic glass with a smooth uniform texture ). Sanliurfa is close by to the extraordinary archaeological dig at Gobekli Tepe, the "belly-shaped mound" where a neolithic temple complex has been uncovered, consisting of an estimated 20 stone circles that are dated at around 9,500 BC, making it thus far the most ancient monument ever found by more than five millennia.
