Corrections:
I FORGOT THE MANTISFLY. This is from the order neuroptera, and is so named because it looks like a mantis, but it is actually a type of neuropteran.
I also left out stalk eyed flies. Diopsidae are acalyptrate schizophoran flies, which places them close to fruit flies
Also The Dobsonflies name origin is actually unknown. That is My Mistake.

This video is a complete beginner-to-advanced guide to fly identification, covering true flies (Diptera) from house flies and fruit flies to robber flies, crane flies, hoverflies, bot flies, and more.
We break down fly anatomy, wing venation, eye placement, mouthparts, behavior, and habitat clues so you can actually identify flies in the wild—no microscope or PhD required. Whether you’re into entomology, bug identification, macro photography, foraging, pest control, or just curious why flies look so different, this video has you covered.
You’ll learn:
• How to tell flies apart from wasps & bees
• Key traits used by entomologists to identify flies
• Why some flies mimic bees
• Which flies bite, which pollinate, and which just look scary
• Common fly families you see every day (but never notice)
Perfect for nature nerds, students, insect lovers, and anyone who wants to finally stop calling everything a “gnat.”
