Passacaglia from Armonico Tributo - Sonata V - Georg Muffat (1653-1704)
This performance was filmed at a concert given by the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble in 2014 at the Linder Auditorium, Johannesburg. Georg Muffat was born in France of Scottish ancestry but considered himself to be German. Taught by Lully and inspired by Corelli, he sought to combine French, Italian and German styles in his music. Muffat’s European travels took him to Paris, Alsace, Bavaria, Vienna, Prague, Salzburg, Passau and Rome, where he wrote the five sonatas of Armonico Tributo, later published in Salzburg in 1682. The entire set ends with this magnificent Passacaglia, comprising 25 variations on a ground bass.
The Buskaid Music School is situated in Diepkloof Soweto, and offers high quality string tuition to the local, less privileged community. In 2022 Buskaid celebrates its 25th Anniversary.
