I visited Afghanistan and interviewed the Taliban

When I visited Afghanistan, it was not easy to get an interview with a Taliban member. Most were either too cautious or didn't feel equipped to speak publicly. I met Ali by chance while visiting the Darul Aman Palace in Kabul. He was a First Lieutenant visiting from a neighboring city, and we were both seeing the building for the first time. A simple greeting turned into a conversation and eventually an interview.

It was fascinating to glimpse the mindset of someone on the other side. While I didn’t always agree with or fully understand his beliefs, I appreciated the honesty and tact with which he spoke.
