Lighting Up the Batmobile: Fiber Optic & SMD Techniques for the 1989 Classic

Welcome to Part 1 of the 1/25 Scale 1989 Batmobile Build! Today, we're diving into detailing the iconic Batmobile cockpit from the classic AMT model kit, recently reissued by Round 2. This build focuses on using fiber optic and SMD lighting techniques to capture that unmistakable dashboard glow.

To get an accurate look, I referenced screen captures from Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1991) to light up the dashboard and consoles authentically.

Tech Breakdown:

SMD Lighting for the Video Monitor: For the passenger-side video monitor, I used a single cool white 0805 SMD LED. Since it was initially too bright, I mounted it on a 1mm styrene piece with hot glue, then added two coats of Tamiya Clear Smoke to soften the intensity.

Fiber Optic Lighting for Dashboard Controls: I used 0.25mm fiber optic strands, paired with colored 3mm LEDs, each connected to a 470-ohm resistor. Each LED was inserted into an 1/8-inch styrene tube, secured with heat shrink tubing, and then locked down with 5-minute epoxy to hold the fiber optics in place.

This kit offers plenty of space for lighting modifications, especially with fiber optics. My only critique is the lack of an insert for the intake above the cockpit cowl.
