What is City of Ten Thousand Buddhas? (萬佛聖城)

One of the biggest temples in the Western world, the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, is found at Ukiah, which is about two hours drive from San Francisco.

It is an international Buddhist monastery founded by Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, an important figure and a Chan Master who brought Dharma from China into the West. The temple follows the Guiyang school of Chan Buddhism, one of the Five Schools of Chan in Asia. The city is noted for its close adherence to traditional Buddhist monastic code.

The "City of Ten Thousand Buddhas" did not get its name because there are ten thousand Buddhas here. The name remains the same regardless of whether there is one Buddha, ten thousand Buddhas, or one hundred million Buddhas.

The number "ten thousand" represents infinity.
