Whereas TSW had the fabulous Ed Welch to write their start-up and regional news theme, Granada had to make do with William Walton. Meanwhile Rediffusion refugee Lionel Maxwell-Lyons struggles to appeal to a northern audience...
This file was essentially an exercise in Synfig Studio to try to accurately replicate the look of black and white film - I threw all sorts of glows and noise and blurs and various other Synfig Studio layer effects at this in order to get the effects I wanted. Only the speckle and sparkle was done in Kdenlive. The countdown film sequence looks about as close as I can get it to the way the original would have looked, although it probably doesn't look as good in YouTube.
The sequence starts with the Marconi-designed "Picasso Card" (that actually predates its use by the ITA by a few years), followed by a filmed countdown sequence which ends with the Granada "Giro G" symbol. There's a bit of nonsense at the end because if you'd spent as long as I have on this sequence you'd want to add Lionel to the end of it too!
Many thanks to the TRANSDIFFUSION archive and to Rory Clark for supplying me with the source material to make this possible.
