Cannabis 1925–2025: A Century of International Control and the Next Hundred Years.
Organized by the European coalition for just and effective drug policies.
ENCOD side Event, Moe05, Tuesday, march 11th
Cannabis 1925–2025: A Century of International Control and the Next Hundred Years. During the side event organized by ENCOD and its partners, we took a look back at the origins of international narcotic drugs control, and in particular at the motivations behind the introduction of cannabis into the Geneva Convention in 1925, adopted in “Room F” of the Palais des Nations. At the time, following an alarmist report by the South African police, there were talks about the risk of “haschischomania” caused by the consumption of (smuggled) cannabis-based cigarettes in Egypt, apart from the medicinal use known for centuries, or the traditional consumption of Dawamesc or Maâjoun. Similarly, there is no serious scientific basis to justify the scheduling of cannabis in the Single Convention in 1961, as the active principle responsible for its psychotropic effects, Delta9 TetraHydroCannabinol (d9-THC), was only isolated chemically by Prof. Mechoulam in 1964, who 30 years later discovered the existence of an EndoCannabinoid System responsible for the metabolism of numerous vital functions, including those of people who fight hard against the many beneficial uses of this plant.
