STORYLINE:
To prepare for its second sale of property from the Kennedy family homes, Sotheby's auction house in New York has grouped the 700-plus items ranging from Mason jars to diamond brooches in a suite of rooms resembling a layout from one of the magazines that, stacked and bound, are themselves being auctioned.
A set of wicker and rattan furniture evokes the sun porch at Hyannis Port. A collection of equestrian paraphernalia including horse blankets and bits attests to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' love of riding and fox hunting.
The February 15-17 sale is more modest in scope than the 1996 Kennedy auction that brought in $34.5 million, including $2.5 million for an engagement ring from Aristotle Onassis.
Sotheby's is estimating that the entire sale will bring in about $1 million, and some lots have presale estimates below $200.
But mystique could drive prices way up as it did in 1996, when a humidor given to President John F. Kennedy by Milton Berle sold for $574,500 and a silver tape measure sold for $48,875.
An 11th-century Khmer sandstone sculpture headlines the sale, and carries a presale estimate of 40-thousand to 60-thousand dollars US.
