Are Australians Eating Healthily Enough?

UNHEALTHY AUSSIES
Australia's just been handed its healthy eating report card. And our grades aren't looking good. Life is all about balance, especially in our diets, but in Australia that balance is a little wobbly. See, according to the CSIRO's Healthy Diet Score report which surveyed more than 235,000 Aussies from 2015 to 2023 and compared their diets against the Australian Dietary Guidelines. Australia only scored 55 out of 100, which is barely a pass. Researchers looked at nine factors including quantity, quality, and variety of foods eaten and found that we've got quite an appetite for takeaway foods, cakes and biscuits, and confectionery, with only 20 per cent of the population eating enough vegetables. Experts say an unbalanced diet can also lead to a lot of health problems like obesity and even some cancers. So it's important we start to get back on track. They say simple things like buying fresh produce instead of processed foods, buying in-season fruit and vegetables to help save some money, and adding more variety by eating three or more different types of veggies with main meals can all help to bring back balance to our diets and lives.

CAVE RESCUE
An American researcher who's been stuck in a cave in Türkiye for more than a week has been rescued! Mark Dickey was on an international exploration mission, when he started to get some serious stomach problems, all while he was more than 1,000 metres underground! It meant he was too unwell to make his way out, sparking a massive rescue operation through the caves' narrow tunnels. And today, after nine days of hard work, he was finally lifted to safety.

OPERA KID
Now, it's time to meet Elliott, who's about to appear in his first opera performance! Michelle caught up with him and his co-star Tomas to find out more.

WINE SPILL
First up, to a street in Portugal that was turned into a river after 2,200 litres of red wine escaped from a nearby distillery. That's enough to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool! Apparently, the flood was caused by two broken tanks that were holding the wine. Yikes.

KILAUEA VOLCANO
Now to Hawaii, where the Kilauea volcano is erupting. If you think you've seen this happen before, you're right. It's the third time the volcano's erupted this year! The good news is, the lava isn't posing a threat to local communities at the moment. But people are still being warned to keep an eye on gases and particles to make sure they're not breathing them in too much.

DOG SURFING
And finally to a charity surfing event in California. Featuring dogs! Yep, canines catching waves were the stars of the show and there was no shortage of them. It's all to raise money for orphan pets at the local pet centre. Some chose to stand up. Others laid down. And some even went in pairs! These guys are riding backwards, hmm, I guess there's a tactic in that.
