Harvesting Organic Tomatoes In Ghana

In my previous post I showed some of the cashew fruit that was growing on the cashew trees that we planted about three years ago, and in this post here are some organic tomatoes that were planted back in December that are now growing.

These tomatoes were actually planted when the rains were low. But then the rains returned and we got more harvest. However, because the tomatoes were not planted at the best time of the year they turned out small. Of course we could have watered them and they would have been larger, but they turned out fine.

It seems that the rainy season was extended this year so we still got a good second harvest. There was not much of a Harmattan season. So, the amount of tomatoes on our second harvest was really a pleasant surprise.

I have frozen quite a few of them and I'll be using many of them to grind up and make tomato paste since I don't like eating the stuff they sell as tomato paste in the cans. I call that stuff tomato poison. Unfortunately, if I eat out somewhere I know they use that stuff to cook with, but I don't want to also bring it into my home.

These is a short documentary online that shows just how horrible the tomato paste industry is. It turns out that not even 50% of the stuff in the can is actually tomatoes. It's some type of filler such as soybean fiber. And much of it is making its way to Ghana and other African countries from China and Italy.

This is a very sad situation because so many of the tomatoes in Ghana actually spoil on the road side and the farmers are struggling because so many people are buying tomato poison in a can. We really need local entrepreneurs to compete with these companies with real locally produced tomato paste. I've seen a couple Ghanaian entrepreneurs going after this market and I wish them great success because our health and wellness depends on it.
