Step inside Old Melbourne Gaol, Melbourne’s bluestone prison on Russell Street for a walk-through of cells, gallows history and artefacts linked to Australia’s most infamous bushranger, Ned Kelly.
Built and expanded through the mid-1800s as the city boomed, the Gaol operated from 1842 until 1929 and was the scene of 133 executions, including Kelly in 1880.
Today it’s a museum managed by the National Trust, with adjacent heritage sites such as the City Watch House (1909–1994) and former Magistrates’ Court.
