1. Various aerials of destruction, excavators knocking down buildings, workers sifting through rubble in Antakya
STORYLINE:
Aerials of the historic Turkish city of Antakya showed the scale of the destruction and devastation caused by two powerful earthquakes that struck the country and neighboring Syria almost a week ago.
Thousands of buildings collapsed, more than 28,000 people were killed and millions left homeless as a result of the disaster.
In Antakya, the capital of Hatay province, scattered rescue crews were still hard at work but many residents had left the area by Saturday.
The devastation spreads across a wide swath of Turkey, affecting 10 provinces in the country’s southeast, and it has strained the ability of domestic and foreign crews to quickly execute rescue efforts.
