Assessing and accommodating client preferences can help to develop more collaborative relationship with clients, and is associated with better outcomes and lower dropout.
But how do you actually go about asking clients about their preferences?
In these brief video segments, Dr John Norcross and I demonstrate some basic ways of inviting clients to express their preferences at the start of psychotherapy or counselling.
The segments demonstrate online work, but can be applied to face-to-face psychotherapy and counselling.
For further information about working with client preferences, see John and my book: 'Personalizing Psychotherapy: Assessing and Accommodating Patient Preferences' (APA, 2021). This includes a wealth of guidance and tips on working with client preferences, including: 'Embed preference talk in a dialogue', 'Don't offer client things you can't do,' and 'Just because a client wants something, it doesn't mean it is most helpful to them.'
To preserve confidential, all 'clients' in these videos are actors. The video is produced by Maya Katherine: https://www.mandy.com/uk/actor/maya-k...
