In July 2023, we embarked on our final set of Heritage Workshops with the curious young minds of St John's Catholic Primary School, Penbridge Junior School, and Arundel Court School - exploring the awe-inspiring sounds of the newly-restored pipe organ at St Mary's Church, Portsea.
Organ expert William McVicker and animateur Duncan Chapman introduced the children to the intriguing mechanics of the organ, delving into how an organ works, and how wind capacity interacts with each of the 2,622 pipes, ranging in size from an impressive 10m length to a mere 1 inch.
Sarah Kenchington, an artist celebrated for her extraordinary mechanical installations, then guided the children through the art of instrument-making. Each child had the opportunity to craft and decorate their own eco-friendly musical instrument, weaving a personal touch into our shared heritage.
Daz Disley, a renowned mechanical instrument artist, and Project Manager Matt Dixon, led the children into the realm of technology and history with The Wireless Organ Project. In a groundbreaking display, Daz unveiled his digital piano roll device. As drawings magically transformed into real-time music performed on the organ, we witnessed a unique blend of art, technology, and the timeless beauty of music.
This educational and enchanting journey was made possible by the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Join us in celebrating the magic of music, the allure of craftsmanship, and the importance of preserving our shared heritage. Special thanks to Linda Mason for capturing and producing this video.
