The 1970s were a time of freedom and adventure for kids, with many activities that would raise eyebrows today. Children roamed neighborhoods unsupervised, climbed trees, and played in dirt piles without a second thought. Biking without helmets was the norm, and seat belts were often ignored. School playgrounds featured towering metal slides and hard concrete surfaces, leading to many scrapes and bruises. Lawn darts, a popular game, are now banned due to safety concerns. Smoking in public places was widespread, and it wasn't uncommon for kids to be exposed to secondhand smoke. The lack of modern safety regulations allowed for a carefree, yet riskier, childhood. Today, these activities are restricted or outright banned to ensure the safety and well-being of children. Understanding these changes highlights the evolution of safety standards and the value of protecting our youth.
