Save Our Seas Distinguished Speaker Series: The Case of the Disappearing Maugean Skate

As part of the 2024 Save Our Seas Distinguished Speaker Series at the Museum of Discovery and Science, we hosted a live event featuring an insightful discussion on "Missing in Macquarie: The Case of the Disappearing Maugean Skate." The event spotlighted Dr. Cynthia Awruch, a lecturer at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania, as she shared insights into the mysterious decline of this unique species and the urgent conservation efforts needed to protect it.

Dr. Awruch has been monitoring the Maugean skate population since 2014 and has observed its decline and a lack of new juveniles. Her research suggests that reproductive failure, likely due to pollutants in Macquarie Harbour, is a significant factor contributing to the species' decline.
