The last day in Spain, and some of the best flying of the week!
Here's some background on some of the places in the video.
In the 8th Century, The Muslims conquered nearly the whole of Spain except a tiny slither along the North Coast. These conquerers were known as 'The Moors'.
Over the next 700 years, The Spanish Christians left in the North slowly pushed back, recovering their country - a time known as the Reconquista.
By the 12th Century, only the south most part of Spain was still under Muslim control, and the Moors were retreated quickly. By 1250 the North/South Border was right here - South of Seville.
This is why there are so many ruined castle here - built to protect the territory recovered by the advancing catholic reconquistadors.
Here's some of the castles I visited:
Torre de Lopera
15th century defensive tower
Castillo de Cote
12th century castle. Only 3 similar in the world (other two in UK and France)
Castillo de Olvera
14th Century castle. Build over the top of the ruined moorish one.
Ronda is famous for its bullring, and for its amazing Bridged Gorge - a 400 feet deep chasm that runs down the middle of the old city.
The bridge is called Puento Nuevo - the 'New Bridge' - because they'd build one just 60 years before that had collapsed killing 50 people. It was completed around 1800.
During the civil war of the 1930s both sides liked to use the chamber over the central span as a torture chamber. Lovely...
Long before the Moors, Spain was of course Roman.
I flew over the Ruins of Acinipo
At 3200 feet on a Plateau , there's a 2000 year old ruins of a roman city of 5000 people.
The stone piles everywhere are just farmers clearing space for sheep
But at the edge of the cliff, there stands one of the oldest remaining Roman Theatres - seating 2000 people.
