'On This Day 1976: Britain’s Historic Heatwave'
On This Day: Heatwave Special!
In July 1976, Britain was in the middle of a heatwave for the history books.
According to the Central England Temperature (CET) record, 1976 was England’s hottest summer for over 350 years, with the average temperature between June and August being 17.77 °C, or 63.99 °F. The summer of 1976 has ever since used as a benchmark for all subsequent heatwaves in Britain.
Coming hot off the back of the great drought of 1975, the searing summer of 1976 brought crop failures, forest fires, and even plagues of ladybirds.
Nevertheless, people up and down the country found a way to enjoy the sunshine, flocking to Britain's beaches and baths and, of course, wearing plenty of sun cream.
