In March 2021, a mass shooter killed eight people at three spa and massage parlors in the Atlanta area. Among the victims were six Asian Americans, four of whom were Korean American. Initial reports from American media were quick to highlight the shooter’s claim of sex addiction, as opposed to humanizing the victims and understanding the impact on the local Korean American community. Some have characterized the shootings as a hate crime, noting the backdrop of rising anti-Asian sentiment in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. As of this posting, there have been over 50 additional mass shootings since the devastating events in Atlanta. Complex World host Jaeki Cho travels to Atlanta to gain some insight on how the local Korean American community is coping with the aftermath and learns about the ways they are moving forward with allyship, dialogue, and respect.
