Tensions escalated in the Philippine capital city of Manila as thousands of protesters took to the streets and clashed with police in an anti-corruption demonstration on Sunday (September 21).
Protesters planned to hold their rally in front of the presidential palace, but were barred by the police, which resulted in violence as people tore down barricades on the streets.
Allegations of mismanagement of the government's flood control projects have been in the spotlight in recent months during the country's monsoon season, which has inundated towns and cities despite spending over 545 billion pesos ($9.54 billion) on flood control since 2022.
The protest also coincided with the anniversary of late strongman Ferdinand Marcos Sr's declaration of martial law, a period many remember as one of the darkest in the country's history.
