Over the past summer, Sugarbush’s Green Mountain Express got struck by lightning. While most issues caused by this strike were resolved, an issue involving the electric motor was not. Because of this, it has had to run on its auxiliary drive all season. Luckily, when Sugarbush built this lift they opted for 2 diesel backup motors that can spin the lift at about 1,000 ft/min. In this video it was running close to, if not at that speed. While it may not be as environmentally friendly as the electric motor, it sounds very cool and can still operate the lift near full speed therefore not reducing capacity. Since diesel fuel is expensive and hard to transport up the mountain, Sugarbush has recently been running this lift on weekends only and forcing skiers to ride Inverness and North Ridge instead. Although it may seem like a bad decision to some, it actually works out pretty well as most skiers will lap North Ridge for most of their day.
