The story follows Aya Brea, a police officer battling mutations caused by sentient mitochondria. In 1999, the sequel Parasite Eve II shifted towards action while expanding the biological narrative. After years of silence, The 3rd Birthday launched on PSP in 2010 with major changes to gameplay and story. Despite no new entries since, the series retains a loyal cult following.
