The 1980s saw further milestones reached by the Copts.
Fr Marcos Tawfik (October, 1980) was the first priest to be ordained from the diaspora in Sydney.
Australia's first theological college, named after Pope Shenouda III was opened by Bishop Antonious Markos in 1982.
The first ever Coptic Youth Trip to Egypt took place in December 1985, with a second to follow four years later, in December 1989.
HH Pope Shenouda III, the late 117th Patriarch of the Coptic Church visited Australian shores for the first time earlier that year.
His maiden papal visit began in November. It concluded a historic 112-day tour of Coptic churches and communities throughout Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia, from August through to December.
