呉製鉄所は、1951年(昭和26年)戦艦大和を建造した呉海軍工廠の跡地に建設され、当時は日鉄日新製鋼で唯一の高炉と熱間圧延設備を備えた製鉄所でしたが、不景気のあおりを受け、2021年9月29日に高炉を停止、2023年9月14日には全設備を停止し、呉製鉄所は閉鎖されました。
工場閉鎖後は、約130haの敷地に広がる設備を約10年掛け解体し、多機能な複合防衛拠点の整備が行われる予定です。

The Kure Works was built in 1951 on the site of the Kure Naval Arsenal, where the battleship Yamato was built. At the time, it was the only steelworks at Nippon Steel Nisshin Steel that was equipped with blast furnaces and hot rolling facilities. However, affected by the economic downturn, the blast furnaces were shut down on September 29, 2021, and all facilities will be shut down on September 14, 2023, and the Kure Works was closed.
After the factory closure, the facilities, which are spread across a site of approximately 130 hectares, will be dismantled over a period of approximately 10 years, and a multi-functional complex defense base will be developed.
