Basic Copper Tooling Demo: Embossing on Metal Step by Step for Beginners

Basic copper tooling techniques are shown to shape and create a copper cuff. The entire process is shown, beginning with a pencil sketch for the cuff design, creating a pattern for the cuff shape, cutting the copper, using chasing and repousse techniques to create the design using wooden skewers, pencils, and ball point pens, and lastly how to add a patina to the copper using liver of sulfur crystals to finish the piece.

Demo led by RISD Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu and Art Prof Teaching Artist Annelise Yee.

Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more. Lieu received an artist fellowship from the MA Cultural Council, has written for the NY Times, and lectured at Brown University, the NAEA conference, and in Vancouver & China.
