Presidents Who Had Been Vice President

This video gives a quick summary of all of the people who've served in both the role of president and vice president. In total, forty-five men have served as president, forty-nine have served as vice president and fifteen have served in both positions. It might be surprising that only a third of the total presidents were once vice president as early in the nation's history the vice presidency had been considered the best route to the executive office.

John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Van Buren and George Bush were all elected as President of the United States while they were the incumbent vice president. When thirty-seventh president Republican Richard Nixon was elected president along with forty-sixth president Democrat Joe Biden, they were former Vice Presidents. Richard Nixon had been Dwight D. Eisenhower's VP and Joe Biden Barack Obama's.

John Tyler, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson, Chester A. Arthur, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Harry S. Truman and Lyndon B. Johnson all ascended to the presidency abruptly following the deaths of their predecessors. Whig John Tyler set the precedent for Vice Presidents taking the office and serving a term of their own when he took the Oath of Office in 1841.

Over America's two hundred and fifty years there have been many vice presidents who tried to get elected as POTUS but failed. John C. Breckinridge, vice president to James Buchanan, ran against Abraham Lincoln in 1864 and then more than a century later Walter Mondale, former vice president to Jimmy Carter, ran against Ronald Reagan.
