Kate Starbird, a professor in the University of Washington's Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, overviews how the technologies we use every day — from the computer mouse to the internet — are rooted in federally funded research and the field of human-computer interaction (HCI).
Starbird draws from her Foundations in HCI course to trace the path from post-World War II science policy to the invention of the personal computer, social media, search engines, AI, and more.
This lecture was delivered June 11, 2025, as a pre-graduation teach-in for HCDE's Class of 2025 and their guests.
