He Yang martial arts of Tianfeng village, Zhangzhou

Shuang Fa He Yang Tang of Tianfeng village
This school teaches both the He Yang Tang boxing arts and the classical Zhangzhou militia weapon arts of the Shuang Fa Tang school.
The He Yang Tang Wuzu Quan system is said to have been brought to Zhangzhou city by a boxing teacher who used the school name of He Yang Tang. Oral traditions regarding this teacher differ wildly between the different lines of He Yang Tang and other schools influenced by his teachings.
However older records suggest that his name was He Yang and he lived from 1818-1908, born in Yongding county in Longyan prefecture and was possibly of Hakka descent.
He Yang came to Zhangzhou in 1845 in order to open a wine shop in the Yanglaozhou neighborhood of Zhangzhou city. While there he also began teaching the system of martial arts that he brought from his home in Longyan.
This school is often referred to as a Wuzu Quan school although practitioners of the school claim that their Wu Zu is a contraction of Wu Dai Zu Shi Quan "5th Generation Ancestral Teacher". This refers to Cui Shuyuan and his position as a 5th generation martial monk of the southern Shaolin temple. The oral mythology of the Heyang style claims the system was originally taught by a man named Cui Shuyuan who was a 5th generation martial monk at the Southern Shaolin temple and one of only 7 to escape the burning of the temple by Qing troops (2 of whom died from illness and injury shortly after leaving only 5 monks to spread the Southern Shaolin skills). Of course this is a direct adoption of the Xilu myth of triad lore.
However the He Yang school's Quanpu references Dazun, Xingzhe, Luohan, Baihe Xian, and Song Ming Taizu as ancestors. However this listing can also be found in Quanpu from white crane schools.
Also unlike modern Wuzu the He Yang Tang system does not practice San Zhan although it does contain Luohan forms.
The boxing sets a student will learn in the Tianfeng Heyang Wuzu system are Shi Zi, Shuang Sui, Da Jie, Zhen Tou, Gu Chui, as well as more advanced forms such as Si Shi Bu Luohan and Xiang He "Gliding Crane" Boxing.
A number of his students went on to become famous for their skills. In particular Cai Yuming the famous founder of the biggest school of Wuzu in southern Fujian was counted among the 13 disciples of He Yang.
Soon many schools opened up in the city and even began to attract students from outside the city such as Su Dashun who came to be recognized as one of He Yang's 13 inner disciples and who later returned to his home in Tianfeng village in Zhangzhou's Longwen district where he passed on He Yang's art to his fellow villagers.
After the death of Su Dashun, Su Tianliang would leave the village for many years seeking other teachers in order to improve his skills. During this time he would spend a number of years following an instructor from Beijing as well as studying with few monks at various temples in Southern Fujian, such as monk Chi-ling, who were said to be highly skilled at martial arts, in addition he spent time studying with 3 brothers from Hunan who were also reputed to have high level skills.
Su Yanghui was another inheritor of Tianfeng He Yang Tang. Near the end of the Qing he passed the county martial exams earning the rank of Wu Xiucai for which reason he was often referred to as "Su Xiucai". He also spent some time studying outside of the village.
Later on after returning to the village Su Tianliang and Su Yanghui worked together to add various skills to Tianfeng villages version of He Yang's martial arts as well as bringing a few new forms particularly a number drawn from local Taizu Quan. Most notably Su Yanghui began to transmit the militia weapon arts of the Shuang Fa Tang school.
Because of this Tianfeng village's martial school changed it's name to Shuang Fa He Yang Tang.
For this reason even the core sets of the Tianfeng He Yang Tang schools differ slightly in name and / or execution from those practiced by school of the Tianzhou He Yang Tang line located inside of Zhangzhou old city.
The next generation who had studied under Su Tianliang and Su Yanghui brought the school to it's peak of popularity in the 1950's when teachers from Tianfeng opened branches in many villages across northern Zhangzhou.
Today only a few of those branches remain but the art is once again gaining popularity within Tianfeng village.
