Teachers at school like to tell us that the walls are blue because the author meant something by that. Baxter Dury has spent eight albums pretending that’s true. On his ninth, he decided to stop.
Enlisting a pop mega producer and surrendering to a new way of working, Allbarone was built from a desire to think less, work faster and up the tempo. Bored of treading the same artistic ground and bored of his same artistic process - Dury wanted a change.
And so, in a beer garden in Hammersmith, we try to provide that. There are typically roles to play here; the journalist trying to sound smart, the artist nodding and agreeing and trying to sound even smarter. A pint deep, that falters.
Instead, the conversation mirrors the record it’s about - one that thinks less and simply flows as Dury sits down with us to talk meaning and lack thereof.
